City Council

Charlotte’s City Council is comprised of  a mayor and 11 council members elected every two years in November, and a professional city manager to run the day-to-day operations. The mayor and four council members are elected at-large by a city-wide vote. Seven council members are elected from districts by voters who reside in each district.

County Commissioners

The nine-member Board of County Commissioners is the governing body of Mecklenburg County. Elections are held in November of even-numbered years with six commissioners elected by district and three commissioners elected at-large. Primary responsibilities include the County budget, setting property taxes, and making appointments to citizen advisory committees, among other duties.

Board of Education

The nine-member Board of Education is the governing body of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.  Its five primary responsibilities are to employ the superintendent, establish policy, determine operating and capital budgets, approve student assignment boundaries and over management of the school district’s major systems.
