Raise The Age Town Hall
March 30 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm
Town Hall meeting on HB 280 – Juvenile Justice Reinvestment Act – legislation introduced that would “Raise the Age” of juvenile jurisdiction here in North Carolina from 15 to 17.
• The Honorable Regan Miller, Chief District Court Judge, Mecklenburg County
•Andrew Murray, District Attorney, Mecklenburg County
•Mujtaba Mohammed, Assistant Public Defender
•Pat Cotham, Mecklenburg County Commissioner
•Shamieka Dixon, MD, Pediatrician, Teen Health Connection
The story is simple. North Carolina is one of two states in the US that automatically treats 16 and 17 year olds as adults in the Court system, despite growing and compelling evidence that this practice is harmful to our kids. It is time for this outdated NC law to be modified so that NC kids can access justice much the same as most other states allow.
House Bill 280 was introduced with strong bipartisan support in the House. We would like to spread the word about the Town Hall on March 30 and ultimately positively influence our State Senators about this important piece of legislation.RSVP HERE
