Call your Senators and Congressional Leaders NOW to save the Children’s Health Insurance Program!
CHIP is an important part of an integrated health care system. Along with private coverage, CHIP, Medicaid, and the ACA have worked together to raise the insured rate among children to 95%, a historic high.
WHAT’S AT RISK?
Designed around children’s needs, CHIP offers benefits which may not be covered by a family’s employer-sponsored insurance (like dental and mental health treatment). The program has a proven track record of effectiveness and a long history of bipartisan support.
Although CHIP is authorized through 2019, Congress’ failure to extend the program’s funding puts access to health care at risk for nearly 9 million U.S. children in families who do not qualify for Medicaid and who lack access to affordable private coverage.
Our children deserve better.
Congressional action to extend funding for the program for five years cannot wait.
Call your Senators and Representatives and urge them to swiftly enact the Keep Kids’ Insurance Dependable and Secure (KIDS) Act of 2017 as an important opportunity for meaningful, bipartisan action. The health of 9 million children depends on it.
256,000 NC children are supported by CHIP.
NC can fund CHIP until March, 2018—other states are expected to run out of funding before the end of the year.
US House passed bill that reauthorizes CHIP by taking money earmarked for the ACA’s prevention and public health fund, cutting grace periods for ACA plan members’ from 90 to 30 days, and raising Medicare premiums for individuals who earn more than $500,000. This bill is unlikely to pass the US Senate.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY
Time is running out but it’s not too late for you to 1) call and 2) tweet (if you have time and a Twitter account, but call first!) our U.S. Senators from North Carolina to urge them to do the right thing and support a strong funding extension bill.
WHAT TO SAY
When you call their office, use this simple message:
“I am calling to ask Senator (Burr/Tillis) to move immediately to support and to vote to pass the bipartisan Keeping Kids’ Insurance Dependable and Secure Act (S.1827). We need a strong five year CHIP funding extension bill, one that DOES NOT sabotage the health care of other Americans. Until Congress takes action, there will be no new funds to ensure health coverage for almost nine million children. States need to be assured that funding will be continued immediately so they can avoid sending termination notices to families or freezing enrollment. Nine million children, pregnant women, their families, and communities are depending on you to act now.
