VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ::
Custody Advocacy Program Volunteers
Custody Advocacy Program Volunteers receive
appointments from the Mecklenburg County Family Court
to represent children involved in contested custody
battles. Our Custody Advocacy Program (CAP) utilizes
a structured team approach to investigate each case
and then make a recommendation as to the best interest
of the child(ren) involved. Our goal is always to minimize
the trauma of custody conflicts on the child(ren) and
identify and advocate for their best interest. For
each case a team consisting of a staff attorney, a
program coordinator, a volunteer attorney and a volunteer
custody advocate work together to accomplish this goal.
CAP
Volunteers interview clients and collateral witnesses;
conduct home visits; gather school, medical and mental
health records, as well as other required documents;
conduct settlement conferences; attend party depositions;
draft motions and other court related documents; and
prepare for and attend trial. Volunteer attorneys and
advocates donate their time and legal expertise to
effectively advocate on behalf of these children who
are caught in the middle of these most contested situations.
CAP
training sessions occur in May and December of each
year, with videotape training available throughout
the year. CAP training sessions are included in the
Continuing Legal Education Program at a reduced rate
for pro bono credit to attorneys who commit to volunteering
with our program.
