OUR CHILDREN ::
Raquel
Raquel's parents never understood why she wasn't like
the other children her age. Her elementary school
was calling constantly to have Raquel picked up from
school because she was suspended.
When Raquel physically assaulted her second grade
teacher, she was facing long-term suspension from school
and her parents were ready to give up.
Finally, Raquel's father contacted the Council for
Children’s Rights. Raquel's advocate went with
her parents to the school and reviewed her file. After
Raquel's advocate spent many hours advocating for Raquel's
best interests, the school agreed to have her tested
for learning disabilities instead of suspending her.
Raquel was diagnosed with autism within two months.
With the help of her advocate, Raquel was moved to
a different school with a special class for autistic
children.
Raquel still struggles at school and home, but now
her parents and teacher understand her better and everyone
is working to help Raquel succeed.
