CUSTODY ADVOCATE PROGRAM
Seven year old Ben has not seen his father since he
was a year old. His mother frequently moved to conceal
their location. Ben has attended three different schools
since starting kindergarten three years ago. Recently,
his father located Ben and his mother, but his mother
refused to allow visitations and so his father filed
for custody. The Council for Children's Rights was
appointed to the case because of the high level of
conflict between Ben’s parents. A Council for
Children's Rights staff attorney, volunteer attorney,
and volunteer custody advocate conducted an investigation
which allowed the judge to order the best and most
appropriate custody and visitation plan for Ben that
allowed him to have a healthy relationship with both
his parents.
Our Custody Advocacy Program (CAP) is a unique,
nationally recognized model. In its 11 years of service,
this Guardian Ad Litem (friend in court) program has
earned a reputation for one of a kind service to protect
the welfare and best interests of children who are
caught in the middle of high conflict custody cases.
It is the court system’s last hope for ensuring
that children do not continue to be torn apart by adult’s
insistence in putting children in the middle of their
battle with one another and for protecting these children
from further psychological, emotional, or physical
damage.
