The story is simple. With the recent agreement between the legislature and the governor in New York to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction, North Carolina may soon be the only state in the US that automatically treats 16- and 17-year-olds as adults in the court system, despite growing and compelling evidence that this practice is harmful to our kids. It is time for this outdated law to be modified for both the sake of our children and our communities. Together we can create safer communities and better outcomes!

KEEP KIDS OUT OF THE ADULT COURT SYSTEM
THANK YOU MESSAGE:
“Dear Representative or Senator xxxxx: Thank you for co-sponsoring raise the age legislation (House Bill 280 or Senate Bill 146). Please continue to advocate for this much-needed and long overdue reform. As you know, evidence shows that the juvenile court system – with programs tailored to how children think and learn – is far more effective at rehabilitating youth than the adult system. Also, please continue to advocate for full funding for raise the age implementation. Thanks for all you do and for your service to the people of our great state.”
PLEASE SUPPORT MESSAGE:
“Dear Representative or Senator xxxxx: I urge your support of House Bill 280 to raise the age of juvenile jurisdiction from 16 to 18. As you probably know, North Carolina is one of only two states in the US that automatically treats all 16- and 17- year-olds as adults in the court system. Evidence shows that the juvenile court system – with programs tailored to how children think and learn – is far more effective at rehabilitating youth, which means lower costs to society and more children growing up to become educated, employed citizens. Please support this important and much-needed change for our children including full funding for implementation. Thanks for all you do and for your service to the people of our great state.”
